Matthias Rothkopf advises and represents clients comprehensively across all areas of intellectual property and IT law, as well as unfair competition and antitrust law.

A key focus of his practice is supporting technology-driven transactions. Together with Hengeler Mueller’s IP/IT team, he works on the firm’s complex, high-volume M&A transactions; the group is regularly recognized as one of the leading practices in this segment.

Matthias Rothkopf has extensive, long-standing experience in IP, patent and antitrust litigation and has represented clients before the Federal Constitutional Court, the Federal Court of Justice, the Federal Patent Court, the Unified Patent Court, the European Commission, the ICC and leading trial courts. His litigation experience covers both individual proceedings and coordinated cross-border disputes involving technically complex subject matter. His U.S. experience makes him a sought-after contact for transatlantic proceedings.

Another focus of his practice lies at the intersection of intellectual property and antitrust law. He advises on the antitrust issues of R&D agreements and license agreements, FRAND terms for standard-essential patents, and the antitrust assessment of IP-related restraints of competition.

Matthias Rothkopf focuses on technology-intensive sectors such as semiconductors, defence, automotive, healthcare and software. In these areas, he advises both established technology companies and innovative mid-sized businesses on securing and exploiting their IP positions.

He regularly publishes on issues relating to intellectual property and antitrust law. Matthias Rothkopf serves as a trainer for our trainee lawyers in the IP practice in Düsseldorf. As lecturer at the University of Osnabrück, he teaches antitrust law with a focus on the interface between antitrust law and intellectual property law.

Matthias Rothkopf is a member of our renowned India Desk. In this context, he primarily advises on technology transactions and IT regulatory matters.
