Hengeler Mueller advises on major restitution case involving Wertheim companies

03. April 2007

Following a legal dispute over many years, KarstadtQuelle AG has come to an agreement with the Jewish Claims Conference as the representative of the Wertheim heirs. This agreement has brought to an end what was arguably the most complex restitution case in the history of property law since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The focus of the agreement presented on 30 March 2007 is the regulation of the legal dispute over the so-called Lenné Triangle in Berlin and all other real estate that used to belong to the Wertheim department store group, including the so-called “Post-Block” in Central Berlin. The agreement has amicably resolved all the contentious issues between the parties.

Hengeler Mueller advised the Wertheim Companies, Hertie as well as KarstadtQuelle AG (following the acquisition of Hertie) in legal disputes in this matter over the last 15 years. Advice was provided by partner Thomas Schmidt-Kötters in addition to associate Vera Jungkind.
