Training

We provide our clients with comprehensively trained attorneys who have developed their respective specialisations based on a broad range of experience in a variety of fields. Our associates are not assigned to just one single field of law or partner. Instead, it has been our policy for many years to assign associates to two partners at a time and change such assignment in certain predetermined intervals, our so-called “rotation system”.

As a result of rotating between partners in intervals of approximately 9 months, our associates become acquainted with various styles of work, types of transactions and fields of activity by working closely with different partners. This enables the associates to develop their own style, to identify a particular field of interest “on the job”, and to specialise accordingly.

We actively promote the development of specialised knowledge, not only in our core practice areas of corporate law, M&A and capital markets, but above all in areas of law such as public, tax, labour, antitrust and intellectual property law. Interested associates are given the opportunity to dedicate more than half of their working time to any one of these areas. Another important field of our activity is advising and representing our clients in litigation and arbitration.

In June 2009, Hengeler Mueller redesigned its training and career programme introducing new standards. The long existing and highly successful Hengeler Mueller Academy is now supplemented by an integrated degree course at St. Gallen University aimed at promoting not only legal expertise but also profound knowledge in business and finance as well as supporting leadership and negotiation skills of our associates. In this unique degree course, associates can achieve approximately fifty per cent of the credits necessary for an Executive MBA degree (Bologna System) with the opportunity to obtain a "Certificate" after three years and a "Diploma" after five years.
